{"id":983,"date":"2013-02-03T15:06:07","date_gmt":"2013-02-03T21:06:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tnsuvcw.org\/?page_id=983"},"modified":"2013-02-03T15:21:59","modified_gmt":"2013-02-03T21:21:59","slug":"2008-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.tnsuvcw.org\/?page_id=983","title":{"rendered":"2008"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class='subpage_title' style='cursor:pointer'>April 2008<\/h2><div class='subpage_content' style='display:none'>Fort Donelson Camp #62\u2019s first 2008 meeting was held 19 April 2008 at Dotson\u2019s Restaurant in Franklin, TN.\r\n\r\nAfter the conclusion of Camp business, and during lunch, a presentation was made by \u201cMr. Lincoln\u201d (a.k.a. Dennis Boggs). \u201cMr. Lincoln\u201d was able to enlighten all present into some of the highlights of President Lincoln\u2019s life and motivations. Additionally, he encouraged the Camp to support education and learning so that we may not forget the past and have to relearn hard lessons.\r\n\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huttick.net\/tnsuvcw2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/LincolnAbrahamDBoggs.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-298\" title=\"LincolnAbrahamDBoggs\" src=\"http:\/\/www.huttick.net\/tnsuvcw2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/LincolnAbrahamDBoggs.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"238\" height=\"241\" \/><\/a>\r\n\r\nThe Camp moved to Fort Granger in Franklin, for a tour. Unanticipated, the Camp was able to observe Union reenactors who were at the Fort for the weekend. Brownlow commanded the 1st Tenn. Cav., U.S., in a Sept. 1864 skirmish against a division of Wheeler\u2019s cavalry commanded by Brig. Gen. John H. Kelly. In this cavalry clash, about 5 miles south of Franklin, Tennessee, Gen. Kelly was mortally wounded and Col. Brownlow was \u201cshot through the body,\u201d but he recovered. Brownlow received his brevet Brigadier General commission in April 1865 and served as Adjutant General, State of Tennessee, under his father, Gov. \u201cParson\u201d W.G. Brownlow.\r\n\r\nFollowing the War, Gen. Brownlow lived in Franklin, Tennessee, where he was held in high regard by the community. At his death, a proclamation stated, in part, \u201cHe came to us during the war a stranger and an enemy, holding the rank of Colonel in the Federal army. Even while occupying this relation he won the admiration of our soldiers for his valor, and the kindness and justice to non-combatants. He was thoroughly imbued with the courage and chivalry of the Tennessean. He lived long enough with us after the war to change our esteem and respect into affection.\u201d\r\n\r\nProminent members of the Franklin community, all Confederate veterans, served as pallbearers escorting Gen. Brownlow\u2019s body from the depot. He is buried in Rest Haven Cemetery, Franklin, Tennessee.\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u00a0Lieut. Col. George W. Grummond, 14th Regiment, Michigan Infantry. 2nd Lieut., 18th Regiment, U.S. Infantry<\/strong><\/p>\r\nLieut. Col. Grummond served as Provost Marshal during the Union occupation of Franklin, Tennessee. Later he commanded the 14th MI in the Campaign of the Carolinas. Following his discharge from the 14th MI, he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 18th Reg., U.S. Infantry. He was assigned to Fort Phil Kearny, WY. On Dec. 21, 1866, under the command of Capt. Fetterman, Grummond led a cavalry attack against the warriors of White Cloud. Gen. James P. Brownlow and Lt. Col. George Grummond. Their<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">graves are just steps away from the most remembered soldier of the Battle of Franklin, Tod Carter, the scion of the Carter family around whose home the Nov. 30, 1864, battle raged.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cWe feel honor should be given to all soldiers who fought,\u201d said Sam Gant, camp commander of the Fort Donelson Camp #62 of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. Established in Dover, Tenn., the camp<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">was activated in August 1995, the second camp or chapter established in Tennessee.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cI had one person here very prominent in preservation say to me, \u2018What? I didn\u2019t know there was such a thing,\u201d Gant said of the reaction he receives when he talks of the Sons of Union Veterans chapter. While born in Ohio, Gant has lived in Tennessee since 1958, teaching history at Lipscomb University and now at Nashville State Tech Community College, with a focus in pre- and post-Revolutionary War history.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cThe main reason I became so interested in this is because I live in Franklin,\u201d Gant said, adding he moved to Williamson County in 1966 and then to Franklin in 1975. He knew his grandfather had served in the Union Army, but since starting research he has found 16 other family members who were Union soldiers, including a great uncle who died in the Union hospital in Nashville.\u201d<\/p><\/div><h2 class='subpage_title' style='cursor:pointer'>October 2008<\/h2><div class='subpage_content' style='display:none'>\r\n\r\nUnapproved Minutes:\r\n\r\nThe Fort Donelson Camp #62 meeting was held on October 18, 2008 at 12:00 in the City Caf\u00e9 Murfreesboro, TN.\r\n\r\nSam Gant the Camp Commander called the meeting to order. The opening prayer was led by David Eagan the Camp Secretary\/Treasurer. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by David Du Brucq\r\n\r\nAn introduction of our guests and members indicated that we had 8 members and guests at the meeting. Bill Heard and Brett Bauer were introduced as new members of Fort Donelson #62.\r\n\r\nWe had a brief business meeting with the following subjects covered:\r\n\r\nDavid Eagan reported that we currently had a balance in our camp checking account of $71.43 as of 9\/22\/08. Form 990-N was filed on July 1, 2008 and accepted by the IRS. We currently have 29 members.\r\n\r\nA request was made by Commander Gant to get all members to please try to get their Grave Registry information completed on their ancestors. He also stated that we want to place grave markers, in 2009, on as many local graves that have not been so marked and that we have funds to support this effort.\r\n\r\nAn announcement was made that the Dept. of TN Annual Encampment at Spring Hill, TN on Jan. 31, 2009, will be sponsored by Fort Donelson Camp # 62. FDC #62 April Meeting will be held at Fort Donelson.\r\n\r\nDavid Du Brucq gave a report on the SVR Organization and sufficient interest and members joined to made this a reality.
